Cikgu Marina Che Bujang, principal of PJN (1st R) with students and teachers in a group photoThis year, Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar (PJNPHAB) Secondary School, Kuala Belait, in its attempt to promote a more environmentally-aware community organised its first Green Day event. Students, teachers and staff were encouraged to wear green attire to school and practise 'green' habits.
"Walk or Cycle to School" was the slogan for the day. Students who lived nearby were encouraged either to walk or cycle to school. Safety issues were also discussed. Another attempt to promote green issues was by encouraging students to bring their own lunchbox and reusable drink containers to reduce the usage of plastic cups and white containers from the canteen thus eliminating the use of non-biodegradable items.
Students were also taught how to recycle papers, bottles, and sweet wrappers by dividing their trash into three different bins. The cleaning campaign was done in the students' individual homeroom with their form teacher helping them to organise the rubbish collected.
After the cleaning campaign, a line of activities was arranged such as face painting which was done at every resting booth throughout the school, tree planting whereby the plants and seedlings were provided by the school and a drawing competition which carried a green theme.
Other activities included building models using recyclable materials, a photography competition and a green day quiz. At the end of the day, prizes were given to the winners presented by Cikgu Marina Che Bujang, the principal of the school.
