As part of the monthly mental health project, the Psychiatric Department of RIPAS Hospital conducted a talk for students of PJN Pg Abu Bakar Secondary School in Kampong Pandan, Kuala Belait yesterday afternoon.

About 45 Secondary Five students listened to the talk which taught them tips on preparing for examinations and handling stress while in school and during examinations.

The talk was conducted by Pg Hj Sabtu bin Pg Hj Tuah, Nursing Officer from the Psychiatric Department.

During the talk, Pg Hj Sabtu taught them the right learning techniques which include using flip charts, group study, light music, being systematic and stealing opportunities to revise.

Before examinations, he advised students to get six to eight hours' sleep, have proper breakfast, be spiritually prepared and make sure they have adequate stationery supplies.

Such tips and techniques could also assist teachers in the management of weaker students who are not mentally prepared for major examinations.

Apart from trying to boost the students' academic performance, the talk is organised to instil self-confidence among the students, said the school's Head of Counselling Unit, Cikgu Mohd Hasbul Wafi bin Fakri .

The talk is the first of such events and will be carried out again in the future.
Pg Hj Sabtu also stated that the department conducts stress-management talks not only for schools, but also to government and private sector personnel.
